Insight

Parents are anxious about immunizing their children and look to healthcare professionals for advice but feel there is lack of information.

Solution

Create an immunization pack complete with training for healthcare professionals in talking to anxious parents, including an e-stick with learning modules, as well as a post-immunization guide for parents.

Process

We asked mothers about immunizing their children. We found that 82% of the respondents did not know how many immunizations should be given to their child within the first year and almost half did not feel like they got enough information from their practice nurse about what to expect after immunization. We also talked to healthcare professionals at trade shows and found that there was not enough training about talking to parents. This was concerning for us.

We developed an immunization pack, training videos as well as a post-immunization guide for parents in collaboration with a healthcare professional. The packs could be ordered by doctors' offices free of charge.

Results

The immunization packs were ordered by approx. 60% of all nurses in the UK, almost every doctor’s office receiving at least one pack. The results of our study sparked great discussion among the nursing community and industry officials, since Calpol was the first to address the need for further education about immunizations, both among parents and healthcare professionals.
